Taylor Books puts The Carpenter Ants in a ‘West Virginia State of Mind’

Oh, to be surrounded by good coffee, amazing music, and every book you could ever want…talk about finding your happy place.

I found mine on Friday night at Taylor Books in Charleston. And while Lewisburg’s “A New Chapter Bookstore” will forever hold a special place in my heart, The Carpenter Ants were playing at Taylor.

Taylor Books is located in Charleston’s downtown historic district, at 226 Capitol St. They’re open 7 a.m. until 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m. until 10 p.m. on Friday, 8 a.m. until 10 p.m. on Saturday, and 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Sunday.

Jupie Little, Ted Harrison, and Michael Lipton – collectively known as The Carpenter Ants – have been making music together for more than 40 years. Mark Bates joined the band after the passing of original-Ant, Charlie Tee, in Dec. 2021.

Considered by many as West Virginia’s preeminent rhythm & blues group, The Carpenter Ants have performed with some of the most celebrated musicians found on this, or any other planet. And while the Ants have played music for thousands of fans all across the world, they make their home in the hills and hollers of West by God.

You can catch The Carpenter Ants performing at The Empty Glass Mountain Stage Aftershow on Sunday night, and the Jerry Run Summer Theater on Friday.
