Celebrating the Majestic Beauty and Resilience of the Mountain State
By Jonathan Eggleston, for RealWV
West Virginia, the Mountain State, is gearing up to celebrate its birth on this special day.
Every year on June 20th, West Virginians come together to honor their rich heritage, remarkable landscapes, and the enduring spirit of its people.

As a proud resident, I am delighted to share some captivating images that showcase the breathtaking beauty of our beloved state, but first let us reflect on the significance of this day.
West Virginia Day marks the historical occasion when the state of West Virginia officially seceded from Virginia during the American Civil War in 1863.

It then became the 35th state of the United States, marking a new chapter in the region’s history.
One of the defining features of West Virginia is its stunning landscapes, characterized by rolling hills, thick forests, and the majestic Appalachian Mountains. It is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.

Whether you’re hiking along the breathtaking trails of Seneca Rocks, exploring the enchanting beauty of Babcock State Park, or taking in the sweeping vistas of the New River Gorge, West Virginia offers beautiful natural wonders, as well as a pretty sweet capitol building located in Charleston WV.

I haven’t been able to photograph the Capital building yet myself, but a few of my friends have managed to capture these stunning images and have allowed me to use them to honor this day as well…

West Virginia’s coal mining history has played a significant role in shaping the state’s identity. While the industry has faced challenges, the hardworking miners and their families have demonstrated unwavering determination and perseverance. Their stories, struggles, and triumphs are an integral part of the state’s culture.

Furthermore, West Virginia has witnessed a change in recent years, embracing innovation, and fostering economic growth in small towns.

Communities are cleaning up downtown areas, promoting tourism, and creating a welcoming environment for businesses and visitors.
On this West Virginia Day, let us celebrate the amazing achievements of our state, its people and our unspoiled night skies.

From the natural wonders that leave us breathless to the rich cultural tapestry that binds us together, West Virginia shows the beauty of resilience and the power of unity.
As we honor this day, let us cherish our heritage and look toward a bright future filled with opportunity, growth, and continued appreciation for the captivating landscapes that define our home.

Happy West Virginia Day to all the proud residents of the Mountain State!
May your spirits be lifted as you face all the magnificence of our great state and its enduring legacy.
