DHHR’s Bureau for Family Assistance offers $200 for back-to-school clothes shopping

By RealWV Staff,

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The application period for the DHHR’s (Department of Health and Human Resources) school-clothing assistance program has been open in West Virginia since July 1.

The program – facilitated by the DHHR’s Bureau for Family Assistance – provides parents or guardians of eligible children $200 to be used toward the purchase of school clothing.

The school-clothing assistance program is income-based. To qualify, a two-person household must have an income of no more than $1,984 per month. A four-person household must not exceed $3,007 per month, a six-person household must not exceed $4,029, and an eight-person household must not exceed $5,052. For a complete listing of income requirements, visit dhhr.wv.gov

According to the Bureau for Family Assistance, certain families will automatically receive the $200 payment – provided they meet certain criteria:

  • Parents or guardians of children in foster care will automatically receive the payment.
  • Parents or guardians of school-age children currently enrolled in the WV WORKS cash-assistance program will receive the payment.
  • Parents or Guardians of children ages four – 18 – who are currently receiving SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits, and whose income does not exceed 130% of the Federal Poverty Level.

NOTE: According to healthcare.gov, the current Federal Poverty Level for a family of four is $30,000 per year. Therefore, 130% of the Federal Poverty Level would be $33,000 per year. Click here to review the 2023 Federal Poverty Levels by household size.

Families who make their own clothes may also be eligible for the $200 benefit for the purpose of purchasing materials.

According to Bureau for Family Assistance Commissioner Janie Cole, nearly one-third of all school-age children were provided assistance ahead of the 2022/2023 school year through the school-clothing assistance program. The application period for the program will close on July 31. The $200 clothing benefit must be redeemed by Oct. 31, 2023.
