UPDATED: State Fair of West Virginia to offer WIC enrollment opportunities

UPDATE: The W.Va. DHHR has confirmed that WIC enrollment will not be available at this week’s Nicholas County Fair.

In an email to RealWV, DHHR’s Interim Director of Communications, Emily Hopta, said, “Each local WIC agency selected two West Virginia fairs or festivals to attend for mobile enrollments based on staffing capacity. Organizations interested in requesting WIC mobile enrollment events may contact Jamie Wilkinson, WV WIC Outreach Coordinator, at Jamie.L.Wilkinson@wv.gov.”

The W.Va. DHHR (Department of Health and Human Resources), on Monday, announced that staff members with the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children – better known as WIC – will extend outreach and enrollment efforts throughout the summer and early fall to include many of the State’s fairs and festivals.

As part of an ongoing effort to modernize services and remove barriers to accessing WIC benefits, the WIC program will utilize an online participant portal to facilitate the application process.

“Fairs and festivals are an opportunity for WIC staff to meet families in the community while highlighting the support and public health services available through WIC clinics,” said Jamie Wilkinson, Outreach Coordinator for West Virginia WIC’s Office of Nutrition Services.  “We look forward to seeing new faces as well as those who have been a part of the WIC program since their pregnancy and child’s birth.”

Local West Virginia WIC agencies will host children’s activities, diaper changing stations and mother’s lounge for infant feeding, and free farmers markets while enrolling eligible families at the following events. Dates listed indicate that WIC staff members will be present, and are not necessarily the complete dates of the fair or festival.

Prominent on the list is Greenbrier County’s “State Fair of West Virginia.” However, conspicuous by it’s absence is the Nicholas County Fair. While reports in February indicated that the Nicholas County Fair had been cancelled indefinitely, it is scheduled to take place this month, from July 19 through July 22.

As of the time of publication, the DHHR has not returned RealWV’s request for clarification regarding the exclusion of the Nicholas County Fair.
