Full results from the State Fair’s youth rodeo

By Stephen Baldwin, RealWV

The opening night of the State Fair of West Virginia was all about young people. While one group of teens and twenty-somethings waited in line to see the Yung Gravy concert, another group of teenagers saddled up their horses behind the grandstand in the horse ring. They came to rodeo!

A group of six riders presented the American flag on horseback, circling the arena in groups of three, while the crowd removed their hats and placed their hands over their hearts as they stood to honor America by the playing of the national anthem. Next, a student led the participants in prayer, asking God for safety, a good time, and one day being greeted at the gates of heaven to be told, “Your entry fees are paid, so welcome home, cowboy.” The crowd responded with a resounding AMEN.

Cowgirls and cowboys from across West Virginia, including a few neighbors from surrounding states, competed in four division over the next two nights. The divisions include–high school, junior high, youth, and peewee.

Run by the West Virginia High School Rodeo Association, the event gives students an opportunity to compete in events such as poles, barrel racing, breakaway, team roping, and cutting.

If you heard hollerin’ behind the grandstand after the concert was over, it wasn’t people trying to get on Yung Gravy’s bus. It was the cowboys and cowgirls competing through the night for the right to be called champions. Congratulations to all those who competed and all those who placed at the WV State Fair this year!

Students will compete again several times this year. For further information, visit www.wvhsra.org or find them on Facebook.
