US Mid-Amateur qualifying at Locust Hill Golf Course sees two qualifiers, two alternates

Two golfers qualified for the US Mid-Amateur qualifying from Wednesday’s event at Locust Hill Golf Course in Charles Town, W. Va.  Over 55 golfers competed for two spots to advance in US Mid-Amateur qualifying, as well as two alternate positions.

Joe Buttgereit of Woodbridge, Va. and Adam Gray of Potomac, Md.

Top honors went to Joe Buttgereit of Woodbridge, Va. and Adam Gray of Potomac, Md., who each scored a one under par 71.  Finishing one stroke behind to claim the two alternate spots were Mike O’Neil of Baltimore, Md. And Frank Meizoso III of Westbury, NY, with an even par 72.

The West Virginia Golf Association (WVGA), in support and collaboration with the United States Golf Association (USGA), conducted the US Mid-Amateur qualifier for players over the age of 25.

West Virginia Ryan Crabtree of Falling Waters tied for sixth, Ian Hildebrand of Charles Town tied for 15th and Ryan Bashour of Morgantown tied for 18th.  Other highlights of the day included five birdies for Adam Gray and Randy Sroka of Maryland, and four birdies each for Caleb Bryant of Pennsylvania, Hoke Carlton of North Carolina, Frank Meizoso III of New York, Mike O’Neil and Gregory Sadowski of Maryland.

“We were asked to host this, our second USGA event and we were 100 percent in,” said Locust Hill’s Owner and General Manager Wayne Clark.  “The course held up and players liked the conditions at this sold-out event.  To host an elite WVGA and USGA event brings people to the area and puts Locust Hill on the golfing map.”

“We are honored to host one of the 68 US Mid-Amateur qualifiers across the country,” said WVGA Interim Executive Director Chris Slack.  “I’m always amazed to see where our participants call home.  In our field of 56 players, in addition to our three West Virginia golfers, we have players from 12 other states and the Czech Republic.  We’re glad for the chance to let them experience at least a part of West Virginia.”
