Major Florida Hurricane Expected

By Jason Christian, Blue Weather & RealWV

Idalia, nearing hurricane strengthen, is churning up the northwestern Caribbean Sea near the western tip of Cuba. Idalia will become a hurricane by Tuesday morning and become the season’s second major hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico on Tuesday or Tuesday night. A Florida midweek landfall is forecast.

As of 1 a.m. CDT, Tropical Storm Idalia was located near 22.6 N and 85.0 W, or about 55 miles north of the western tip of Cuba. This places Idalia about 190 miles southwest of the Dry Tortugas in Florida. Idalia is packing top sustained winds of 70 mph and is moving north at 8 mph. Its minimum central pressure is 983 mb, or 29.03 inches of mercury.

It will be interesting to see what this storm does once it gets back over water. Can this thing do a loop and return toward the southwest and make a second run at Florida, this time from the Atlantic? That would be quite the scenario but I can’t say it’s impossible.
