More than 30 competitors gathered at Greenbrier Valley Fitness this past weekend for West Virginia’s Strongest 2023, the state’s annual United States Strongman competition. A trip to nationals was on the line for the male and female athletes in attendance, and a nice crowd of around 50 people came to cheer them on.

Dan Caraway represents United States Strongman and is a former national runner-up. He organized the event. He reflected on the day by sharing several highlights.

“Greenbrier Valley Fitness’s own Nick Rookstoll had a dominate performance in the deadlift with 13 reps of 495 pounds,” said Dan. “He also had a very good performance on the circus dumbbell with 8 reps of 120 pounds, but was just shy of midweight Jake Arthur,” who has won West Virginia’s Strongest several times previously and came in first again last weekend.

“Jake Arthur maintained his title with wins in the rest of the events (besides the deadlift),” Dan added.

“Veteran Strongman champion AJ Frida also had another well-rounded performance,” said Dan, as he came in first place in the heavyweight division.

The top three athletes in each weight class are now eligible to compete at nationals. Those qualifying competitors are listed below in results:

Dwight Bundy, owner of Greenbrier Valley Fitness who hosted the event, is already excited for next year. “We had competitors from across the country, the furthest being Texas,” he told RealWV. “It was awesome to see such a positive and encouraging environment and we look forward to bigger and better next year!”

Dan Caraway was quick to share the credit to his team for making the event a success, saying, “I’m very grateful for the staff and professional judges.” In particular, he thanked Trent Walker, Scott Loving, Joshua Hall, and the GVR staff.

“I do believe next year will be bigger and better,” he reflected. “I plan on adding a novice women’s division and promoting it much more.”
