Smoot students roll out the red carpet for veterans

Smoot Elementary, located in northwestern Greenbrier County, honored veterans at a special ceremony yesterday.

The school cooks prepared a full breakfast for veterans in the community and invited by students. Following the meal, the students lined the entry to the gymnasium. They waved flags, cheered for the veterans, and welcomed them to the program.

Under the direction of Ms. Boothe, the fifth grade students then several patriotic songs for their special guests.

A slideshow played during the program featuring pictures submitted by students and community members of veterans from the Smoot area.

Ron Ruescher greets children as he enters the gymnasium to a hero’s welcome. Ron is a pilot who flew fighter jets in the Air Force. He reads to Smoot students on Wednesdays along with his wife, Yolanda.
