Smoot Elementary kicks off ‘One School, One Book’ program

By RealWV Staff,

Late last week, Smoot Elementary School held a kickoff assembly for “One School, One Book.”

The program provides one book at no charge to every student in the school. Educators ask parents to read 10-15 pages of the book Sunday-Thursday night each week with their children, allowing the entire school to read the book together at the same pace. During morning announcements the next day at school, students are asked trivia questions about the previous night’s reading. Once the school finishes reading the book, they hold a movie night (showing the film version of the book they read) for families to enjoy together.

Principal Molly Judy says, “Reading professionals recommend reading books aloud that are beyond a child’s reading level. It will strengthen their listening and comprehension skills.”

At the kickoff assembly, Ms. Anderson (Title 1 educator) dressed up alongside Principal Judy to bring the story alive for the students. This year’s story is James & the Giant Peach by Roald Dahl.

“The skit gets students excited about reading our book,” says Cassie Shipe, who also teaches at Smoot. “We hope the entire school will join in on the reading adventure!”
