Herd tennis sweeps Troy in SBC home opener

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University Tennis (10-6, 1-1 Sun Belt) opened the weekend with a 7-0 sweep of the Troy Trojans (7-5, 1-1 Sun Belt) at the 7827 Tennis Center in Barboursville.

“It was a good bounce back, I thought they responded after last week against a really good Troy team,” Herd Tennis head coach John Mercer said after the win. “Troy had a really good win last week against Georgia Southern. I knew they were prepared to play us because even though it’s only the second conference match of the season, it’s important come seeding time for the conference tournament. It’s one match, so we need to keep going.”

The Herd make quick work in doubles as Sophia Hurrion and Aisling McGrane took their contest at number two doubles as Johanna Strom and Emma Vanderheyden followed with a 6-2 victory at number one doubles, 6-2.

Gabrielle Clairotte and Rieke Gillar’s contest at number three doubles went unfinished with them leading 5-2.

Marshall then had a dominant performance in singles sweeping all six matches. Doroteja Joksovic started things off with her sweep on court three followed by a victory from Vanderheyden on court two. Hurrion sealed the match at 4-0 with her victory on court four. McGrane, Strom and Gillar closed out the sweep on courts five, one and six, respectively.

“Hopefully we’ve learned some lessons as the year has gone on, especially the last five or six matches,” Mercer said about the performance and looking at Georgia State. “
