Monroe County Commission accepts Jones’ resignation, will meet Tuesday to name interim sheriff

UNION, W.Va. – After more than a year of controversy, the saga of the Monroe County Commission and Sheriff Jeff Jones reached its conclusion Monday, as commission members gathered for a special meeting to accept Jones’ resignation.

After the meeting Monday morning, the commission released the following statement:

“The Monroe County Commission held an emergency meeting this morning to accept the resignation of Jeff Jones as Sheriff of Monroe County and begin the search for an interim sheriff who will serve the remaining nine months of Sheriff Jones’ term until his duly elected successor takes office on January 1, 2025.

“Sheriff Jones’ resignation effectively ends the civil litigation that began when the commission passed the resolution to remove him from office on Oct. 26, 2023. This has been a difficult process for all parties involved and the commission wishes to express its gratitude to Mr. Jones for electing to resign rather than proceed with a contentious hearing. The commission wishes Mr. Jones the best in his future endeavors.”

The resolution, which was originally drafted last June by County Clerk Jeremy Meadows and Prosecuting Attorney Justin St. Clair, accuses Jones of mismanagement of the Sheriff Department’s evidence room, the improper investigation of a 2022 shooting incident, and the alleged cover up of a deputy’s inappropriate relationship with a 17-year-old high school student.

For the final accusation, Jones was arrested and charged, on Sept. 15, by the West Virginia State Police with deceiving the Civil Service Commission, and failure to report known or suspected child abuse or neglect as a mandatory reporter. Those charges are still currently pending.

The commission will meet again at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday for the purpose of selecting an interim sheriff. RealWV will provide updates regarding the naming of the interim sheriff as additional information is made available.
