Ham, Bacon, & Egg sale raises $88,000 in Greenbrier/Monroe

By RealWV staff,

With a storied history dating back to the 1940s, the Greenbrier/Monroe Ham, Bacon, & Egg Sale that supports 4H and Future Farmers of America students capped off another successful sale last Friday night.

“We want to thank the State Fair of West Virginia, Billy Morgan, Ben Morgan, and Chub Warren for auctioneering,” said Josh Peploski, WVU Extension Office Agent for Greenbrier County. “It never ceases to amaze me just how well the community comes together to support the youth of the Greenbrier Valley.”

This year, 97 buyers registered to bid and 53 buyers purchased items from students. In total, they contributed $87,827.85.

Students put much of that money back into their livestock for next year, and many also set a portion aside for their future education.

“The journey in preparing your hog for market can be quite tedious,” says Keilei Christian, FFA President at Greenbrier East. “As students, we trim, cure, dry, and finish both our hams and bacons.”

“It’s a cool product,” Peplowski says. “It’s a shelf stable, authentic country cured ham that can be consumed or hung to store for several more months. And again, this isn’t happening other places. It’s something to be proud of.”
