Marshall’s Tyler Jones, Ryan Bilby earn top-20 finishes at ECU Intercollegiate

GREENVILLE, N.C. – Marshall graduate Tyler Jones continued his consistent play in the final round of the ECU Intercollegiate, finishing with a 1-over 73 on Tuesday to finish in a tie for 16th place at Brook Valley Country Club.

Despite cold and windy conditions, Ryan Bilby also turned in one of the low rounds of the day for competitors with a 2-under 70 – one of only seven rounds under par among the 90 golfers competing on Tuesday.

The junior from Follansbee made the biggest jump of any competitor in the field on Tuesday, moving up 24 spots on the final day to close out tied for 20th place.

“The guys fought hard today,” Marshall Men’s Golf coach Matt Grobe said. “When we started, it was 36 degrees and, after a couple of holes, the winds picked up. I was happy with the round and I think we’re making progress.”

Bilby surged over his final nine holes, recording four birdies – three consecutive birdies on Hole Nos. 2-4 and a birdie on his final hole at No. 9 – to close out his tournament.

Jones was steady throughout, stringing together 12 straight pars at one point before a bogey on No. 8. Jones was one of only nine competitors to shoot 75 or better in all three rounds of the tournament in tough conditions.

It was part of a Marshall effort that saw marked improvement on the team’s final nine holes – the front-9 at Brook Valley C.C. – as they moved up to 10th on the leaderboard.

Marshall had the fourth-best round of the day out of 15 competing teams at the event.

The Herd’s five team competitors combined to finish their final nine holes at a collective 2-under par, providing a highlight as they get ready for their next event – the GolfWeek/AGT Intercollegiate at Pawley’s Island from April 1-3.
