American Legion Post 100 holds monthly meeting

The American Legion (AL) Post 100 held its monthly business meeting at 6:00PM on Monday, 25 March 2025 at the Senior Center in Union. A quorum was present, enabling the Post to conduct regular business and hold annual elections. The following is a summary of the business the Post conducted and the election results:

-Post 100 will support the following events in the next three months. Contact us for details:

–18 April: American Civil War living history at James Monroe High School (JMHS)

–19 April: Mountain View School Veterans Appreciation “Ruck March” through Union

–22 April: James Monroe Day and Military Signing Ceremony at JMHS

–18 May: AL Post 100 Golf Tournament at Fountain Springs Golf Course

–21 May: Flag Retirement Ceremony at the Monroe County School Board office

–27 May: Memorial Day Ceremony at the Veterans Monument in Union

–8 June: Monroe County Farmer’s Day Parade

– AL Post 100, Al Post 145, and the Vietnam Veterans of American (VVA) Chapter 1108 will sponsor three students for American Legion Auxiliary Rhododendron Girls State and three others for American Legion Mountaineer Boys State. All sponsorship checks have been turned in for these deserving students.

-AL Post 100 is accepting nominations for AL Teacher of the Year, Law Enforcement Officer of the Year, and Fire Fighter of the Year. These are due by the end of March. Contact us for details.

-AL Post 100 is hosting a golf tournament on 18 May at Fountain Springs Golf Course to raise badly needed funds for community service projects. Contact us for details, team signup sheets, and hole sponsorship forms.

-As of this year dues will increase from $35 annually to $45 annually. This is the first increase in 20 years. Members who pay online by 1 July 2024 for three years can lock in the current $35 rate. Make sure you designate WV Post 100 if you sign up on line.

-The next meeting will occur at 6:00PM on Monday, 22 April 2024 at the Union Senior Center. We will continue to meet every other month following the VVA meeting on the fourth Monday.

-AL Post 100 elected the following officers for 2024-2025, to take effect on 1 July 2024:

–Post Commander: Scott Womack

–Post Vice Commander: Frank Gagnier

–Post Adjutant: Tim Sluss

–Post Financial Officer: Bob Allen (pending agreement)

–Post Chaplain: Steve Ellison

–Post Sergeant at Arms: vacant

Any currently serving or honorably discharged service member regardless of period of service or combat status is eligible for membership in the American Legion.  Its mission is “to enhance the well-being of America’s veterans, their families, our military, and our communities by our devotion to mutual helpfulness.”  If this mission is something you can get behind, then join us! As you can see by our schedule we are involved in the community and need more members to keep our fellow citizens and youth connected to veterans.
