Herd’s Ryan Bilby named SBC men’s Golfer of The Week

Junior standout finished 2nd at Flyer Invitational to end successful fall season

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall junior Ryan Bilby capped his Fall 2024 season in grand fashion, earning the Sun Belt Conference’s Men’s Golfer of the Week award, the league announced on Thursday.

Bilby earned the award after finishing in 2nd place at the 2024 Dayton Flyer Invitational this week.

“We are so happy for Ryan!” Marshall Men’s Golf coach Matt Grobe said. “He has had a wonderful career at Marshall and I am happy that he was recognized by the Sun Belt as the league’s Golfer of the Week – his first time winning the award. NCR Country Club played so tough this week and Ryan played incredible. This is a well-deserved award for a very impressive performance.”

Bilby was one of only four participants in the field of more than 70 golfers who finished under par for the week. After a first round of 1-over 72, Bilby fired back with rounds under par of 69 and 70 at the par-71 course to finish in the red and in 2nd place by himself.

The Follansbee, W.Va., native led the entire field for the week, notching 13 birdies with much of his damage coming on the par-5s where he finished at 5-under for the week.

Bilby’s final round featured five birdies with three in a seven-hole stretch that put him contention for the win.

The performance continued a trend of stellar play from Bilby, who completes the fall with four consecutive top-10 finishes and top-20 finishes in all five of Marshall’s events played.

In 13 rounds played this fall (two events shortened to 36 holes due to weather), Bilby led Marshall with a 70.7 scoring average. That includes eight of his 13 rounds played finishing below par.
