Greenbrier and Monroe Counties have a new sheriff in town
By RealWV Staff,
As of the start of the new year, southern West Virginians will see two new sheriffs in town, as Bart Baker and Michael Heller begin their terms in office.
Heller, who ran unopposed in May’s Republican primary, succeeds interim Monroe County’s Sheriff Michael Miller. Miller was appointed in March to serve after the resignation of former Sheriff Jeff Jones. Heller most recently held the position of Chief Deputy in Monroe County. Heller was sworn in by Monroe County Clerk Jeremy Meadows.

Like Heller, Bart Baker served as Chief Deputy in Greenbrier County. However, he defeated two challengers during May’s Republican primary. Baker succeeds longtime Greenbrier County Sheriff Bruce Sloan, whose retirement became effective on December 31. Baker was sworn in by Circuit Judge Robert Richardson.
Baker’s swearing in took place during a December ceremony at the Greenbrier County Courthouse. The ceremony also included the swearing-in of re-elected County Commissioner Tammy Tincher and Assessor Joe Darnell, as well as newly-elected Prosecuting Attorney Nicole Graybeal.
