LEWISBURG, W.Va. – The Greenbrier County Commission, on Thursday, held a special meeting to address several personnel matters. The meeting, which lasted less than five minutes in total, was the first gathering of 2025 for Greenbrier’s County Commissioners, and served as Lowell Rose’s reintroduction as commission president.
The hiring of Kendalyn Workman as the new victim service coordinator in the County Prosecutor’s Office was approved by the commission, as was the retirement of Lessie Lewis from the Greenbrier County Sheriff’s Department.
Regarding Lewis, Commissioner Tammy Tincher said, “She has been a great asset, and done a tremendous job.”
“[She] worked with all of our deputies and sheriff for a significantly long time, and ran the office very, very well,” Tincher added. “I would congratulate her on her retirement, and thank her graciously.”
While Lewis’ retirement from full-time employment was effective as of December 31, she did agree to return to the Sheriff’s Office in a part-time capacity, beginning last Thursday. Lewis will work a maximum of 20 hours per week going forward.
According to Greenbrier County Sheriff Bart Baker, who was in attendance for the meeting, “Lessie is just a great employee.”
“She has agreed to stay for a couple days a week,” Baker noted. “One, to train her replacement, and two, to keep us running smoothly. We can’t live without her.”
Lastly, commissioners approved the promotion of Capt. Joshua Martin to the role of chief deputy, a role most recently held by Baker before his election as county sheriff.
“Josh was the chief deputy up until December of 2023, when I took over,” Baker explained. “Now that I have retired and filled the position of sheriff, I wish to place him back in the chief deputy role. He does a great job there.”
“(Martin has) many, many years of experience,” Baker added. “It would make my administration’s transition quite a bit smoother to have him in place.”
