Bridgeport, Fairmont, and Morgantown High Schools advance to Academic Showdown state finals

FAIRMONT, MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia Department of Education (WVDE) congratulates two teams from the Academic Showdown Region 6 competition at Fairmont State University (FSU), and two teams from the Region 1 competition at West Virginia University, that have advanced to the finale.

In Region 6, Bridgeport High School Team 1 (Harrison County) won first place, and Grafton High School Team 1 (Taylor County) won second place. In Region 1, Morgantown High School’s Team 2 and Team 1 wone first and second place, respectively. All four teams will travel to Charleston for the April 30, 2025, championship at the West Virginia Culture Center.

  • Grafton High School
  • Lewis County High School
  • Liberty High School
  • Lincoln High School

The following teams participated in the WVU Regional:

  • Morgantown High School Team 2
  • Morgantown High School Team 1
  • Doddridge County High School
  • University High School
  • John Marshall High School
  • Weir High School
  • Magnolia High School
  • Wheeling Park High School

“It’s fun to compete together as a team. This is a cool competition,” said Bridgeport Team 1 Captain Tyler Hackney. “We are coming back stronger because we recognize that everyone has different strengths, and that has helped us. A lot of information you can pick up by living your life, paying attention in class and staying curious.”

“This program has grown significantly since it began four years ago,” said State Superintendent of Schools Michele L. Blatt. “Congratulations to the Bridgeport and Grafton teams for their second year of success. We are proud of them as well as all of the teams that have worked so hard to prepare for the 2025 Academic Showdown.”

Next up will be the Region 2 competition, at Marshall University, on Thursday.

  • Ravenswood High School
  • Williamstown High School
  • Hurricane High School
  • Ripley High School
  • Winfield High School
  • Parkersburg High School
  • Spring Valley High School

Teams from Spring Mills High School and Berkeley Spring High School have already qualified for the state finals, by placing first and second in Region 7 competition.

The Showdown is a partnership between the WVDE, the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission, the West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture and History and West Virginia Public Broadcasting.
