By RealWV staff,
WASHINGTON, DC – President Donald Trump, on Tuesday, announced his nominations of former Delegate Moore Capito and Jefferson County Prosecutor Matt Harvey to be considered as the next U.S. Attorneys for West Virginia.
Capito, the son of current U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito and grandson of former W.Va. Governor Arch Moore Jr., resigned his position as delegate in 2023 to launch an unsuccessful gubernatorial campaign. Matt Harvey, Monroe County native and Capito’s fellow nominee to the north, currently serves as board-chair of the West Virginia First Foundation, the non-profit organization created to receive and disburse opioid settlement funding. Both men’s nominations are four a term of four years, and must be confirmed by the U.S. Senate.
Following his nomination, Capito released the following statement on social media:
“Very grateful to President Trump @POTUS for the honor of being nominated to serve in his historic administration as U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of West Virginia. President Trump’s commitment to law and order is making our state safer and stronger.”
The West Virginia Democratic Party was quick to respond with a social media post of their own:
“Now West Virginians know without any doubt who Shelley was negotiating for.
Herself and her son.”
Senator Capito posted her excitement about the nomination of Moore Capito just prior to voting in favor of the “Big, Beautiful Bill,” the controversial Trump-sponsored federal budget reconciliation proposal. The bill was passed in the U.S. Senate by a vote of 51 to 50.
