Blue Bend: A Greenbrier County Tradition

A Place Where Time Slows Down

Tucked away along the clear waters of Anthony Creek in Greenbrier County, Blue Bend Recreation Area is a place where time slows down, the mountains wrap you in peace, and memories seem to linger in the air. Known for its inviting trails, shady picnic areas, and a swimming hole with a refreshing “bite,” this mountain retreat has been a favorite destination for locals and travelers alike for decades.

A Family Tradition That Runs Deep

For my own family, Blue Bend is more than just a park.. it’s a tradition! Every year, on the first Sunday in August, our clan gathers here for a reunion that has become as much a part of summer as warm evenings and lightning bugs. Under the big pavilion, we share home-cooked meals, swap stories, and listen to the laughter of kids playing in the water. It’s a ritual that ties generations together, and some of my core childhood memories were captured during these gatherings.

The Famous “Blue Hole”

The crown jewel of Blue Bend is its swimming hole, locally called the “Blue Hole.” Even on the hottest days, the water sends an icy shiver through you as you wade in. That’s thanks to a natural spring that feeds directly into Anthony Creek, keeping the water crystal clear and refreshingly cold all summer long. The deep bend of the creek is perfect for a swim, while the shallow sections upstream offer a safe place for younger kids to splash and play.

Trails and Mountain Views

Surrounding the recreation area, a network of mountain trails winds through forests, past rocky overlooks, and along the creek. The Blue Bend Loop Trail is a favorite for hikers, offering scenic views and the peaceful sounds of the wilderness. We used to call the long switchback trail up the mountain, “The Giraffes Neck” and the challenge was always, “Who is conquering the Giraffes neck this year? (Knowing that no one actually could). We were on a mission and everything was exciting at that age.

Hidden Treasures of the Bend

What many people don’t realize is that Blue Bend holds a few hidden treasures. Quiet fishing spots dot the creek’s edge, with deeper pools known to hold trout and other game fish. Certain stretches of the trail open into small clearings where you can catch stunning sunset views over the mountains. And if you’re an early riser, mist rising off the creek on a cool morning is a sight you won’t soon forget!

Why Blue Bend Endures

Blue Bend’s appeal lies in its simplicity. There are no flashy attractions, just a timeless combination of clear water, mountain air, and wide-open space to gather with the people who matter the most. Whether you come for the hiking, the swimming, or simply to sit by the creek and listen to the water flow, this Greenbrier County gem has a way of leaving you refreshed in more ways than one!

And for my family, when that first Sunday in August rolls around again, we’ll be back, at the bend in the creek where some of my favorite summer memories are made.
