A beach in Hinton? Check it out.

By RealWV staff,

After breaking ground two years ago on a plan hatched two decades ago, residents of Hinton in Summers County, West Virginia, celebrate the opening of Batteau Beach at Hinton Landing on September 2, 2025.

Located at 125 Grace Street in the Avis neighborhood behind Advance Auto Parts, the recreational area provides direct public access to the New River including a sandy beach, playground, kayak launch, trailhead, picnic tables, shelter, bathrooms, and a large, flat greenspace.

The land originally belonged to the State of West Virginia but was gifted to the City of Hinton and built with the help of Congressional funding from Sen. Shelley Moore-Capito.

“This new attraction is a critical aspect in making Hinton a true destination that appeals to more tourists and visitors alike. I was proud to work along-side Mayor Scott in securing funding for this project through the Congressionally Directed Spending process,” Capito said. “Initiatives like this have the potential to revitalize communities, create economic development, and improve the lives of our residents.”
