Front Porch Conversations: Let’s get dirty – with a soda

Can someone please tell me about dirty sodas? My middle-schooler wants us to make them. I have googled them, but really need to know what’s good and what isn’t without spending a lot of money.

Welcome to our Front Porch!

When we were first asked about dirty soda, we had no clue what it was. So, we did what every good knowledge seeker does – we asked Google. Apparently, we have been missing out.

Our first thought, upon learning about this new discovery, was that soda and coffee creamer sounds like a really weird combo. Our second thought was, ‘We’ve got to try this.’

Basically, dirty soda is a non-alcoholic mix of your favorite soda, coffee creamer (plain or flavored), fruit juice, or flavored syrups. These drinks are non-alcoholic and can be mixed to suit your own tastes.

Google tells us that the history of dirty soda begins in Utah in the 2010s, when Mormons wanted to make a different kind of drink that had no alcohol or caffeine. Needless to say, these drinks have caught on with the nation. And, many versions, as well as brands, have now been made. (Thank you, TikTok.)

We have the following suggestions to get started on making simple dirty sodas:

  1. Sprite and cranberry juice. We have no particular recipe for this, but maybe ¾ cup Sprite and ¼ cup cranberry juice poured over ice. Suit to taste. This one may be good around the holidays.
  2. Orange soda and vanilla flavored coffee creamer. (A potential middle-school aged favorite.) Again, we have no specific recipe for this, but treat the soda as you would coffee and keep adding splashes of vanilla creamer to start working on your mixture. Pour over ice.
  3. Coke and hazelnut flavored coffee creamer. (See our kind of recipe above.) We thought this one would be a little strange, but we had these things on hand. It was, surprisingly, not bad at all.

We hope a lot of folks will write in with their favorite concoctions. Because, we would also like to give them a try.
