WV National Guard to remain in Washington for the entirety of 2026

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Gov. Patrick Morrisey, on Tuesday, announced that the West Virginia National Guard’s (WVNG) deployment in Washington, D.C. will continue through the remainder of 2026.

Members of the West Virginia National Guard have been stationed in Washington, D.C. since Aug. Initially deployed to combat what President Donald Trump referred to as a “criminal epidemic,” according to press releases from both Morrisey and the WVNG, guard members will remain on deployment “as part of ongoing efforts to support public safety operations in our nation’s capital.”

“West Virginia’s Soldiers and Airmen continue to demonstrate exceptional professionalism and dedication while supporting operations in Washington, D.C.,” Maj. Gen. Jim Seward, Adjutant General of the West Virginia National Guard, said through WVNG’s press release. “Their presence reflects the trust placed in the West Virginia National Guard and our commitment to supporting public safety missions wherever we are needed.”

On Nov. 25, Ssgt Andrew Wolfe and Spc. Sarah Beckstrom were critically wounded when ambushed while on deployment in Washington, D.C. Beckstrom died from her injuries on Nov. 27. Wolfe survived the attack, but is still recovering from severe head wounds. The attack occurred approximately two blocks from the White House. 

“President Trump’s leadership in prioritizing the safety and security of our nation’s capital has enabled this vital mission, and our brave Guardsmen are proud to volunteer and make Washington, D.C. safer and stronger.” Morrisey said, through his press release. “The men and women of the West Virginia National Guard stand firmly with President Trump in this effort, and we are honored to support his commitment to public safety.”
