ATHENS, WV — Individuals attempting to re-enter society after being released from the correctional system often face unique challenges with everything from obtaining a job to family judgment, finding housing, and meeting supervision restrictions.

Often, being released from the jail or prison system is only the first step in finding freedom. It’s estimated that 95 percent exit prison without adequate support to help them experience a successful transition to society.

The Concord University Sociology program is sponsoring a Reentry Simulation at CU, in the ballroom, on the third floor of the Jean and Jerry L. Beasley Student Center, Tuesday, April 14, 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The practical training exercise is designed to offer a unique opportunity for students and community members to experience the reentry process.

Each participant will receive a bio of someone who is formerly incarcerated and attempting to reintegrate into society. Organizers say the simulation will provide a sense of what it’s like to be released from the correctional system, and the barriers formerly incarcerated people face upon release.

The event is open to students, faculty, staff, members of local reentry councils, and community members. There is no fee for the event, but participants are asked to please bring a non-perishable food item for the CU campus food pantry to serve as admission.
