Hello, West Virginia!

Hello, again. And again. I’ve moved away from West Virginia more times than your average bear (or black bear to give props to our state critter). From Miami Beach to NYC to Memphis, I found new, exciting places to call home. During those years when life was wide open, one thing was certain: I’d be back, my backseat packed with mismatched luggage and misunderstood dogs (I see you, pit bull lovers!).

Fifteen years in, I can confidently say I’m finally home for good; based in Morgantown, a stone’s throw from my native Clarksburg. And now I’ve found another home, as executive editor at TheRealWV.com. Returning to the publishing world is like sinking into a favorite comfy chair — one that’s been freshly upholstered with new throw pillows. It’s the perfect role to tap into my wealth of professional (and life) experience.

For the past 20 years, I’ve played the part of copywriter, ghostwriter, and editor. I’ve written for big-name brands and edited an award-winning novel. My narrative journalism has appeared in various media outlets. I’ve also worked in the fashion and film industries in major metros. Most importantly, I’m a mom of two brainy, funny, sweet young boys and two beloved rescue dogs. My other great love is storytelling; all of my adventures find their way into nonfiction essays I share on Substack. I’m a fan of memoirs, healthy home cooking, vintage/handmade anything, and leg day at the gym (aka my living room).

Our mission at The Real WV is to share stories at the heart of Appalachian identity. My mission as executive editor is to take that one step further by embracing and uplifting that one-of-a-kind identity. What can you expect? News that informs and advocates. Stories by West Virginians about West Virginians who shape our lives with their food, charity, art, and music. Photography that awes. More mountain state inspo than you can shake a stick at.

I invite you to follow along as we grow this publication and honor everyday life here in beautiful West by God!

With Gratitude,

Danielle Costello
