Greenbrier Historical Society’s Appalachian Ingenuity Series brings hands-on arts and heritage workshops to Lewisburg

LEWISBURG, W.Va. — Throughout Appalachian history, people have relied on creativity, resourcefulness, and a strong tradition of sharing knowledge to adapt, create, and thrive. The Greenbrier Historical Society is celebrating that spirit through its new Appalachian Ingenuity Series, a free monthly workshop series taking place June through September at the North House Museum.

Held one Saturday each month, the series will feature local artists, makers, and educators sharing skills rooted in Appalachian heritage, craftsmanship, and creative expression. From fiber arts and paper marbling to herbalism and calligraphy, participants will have the opportunity to learn new techniques, create something by hand, and connect with others in a welcoming environment.

All workshops are free and open to the public, and all materials will be provided.

Workshop Schedule

Saturday, June 27┃ 12 – 2 p.m. Yarn Tassel Hangings with Shara Harel

Participants will create decorative yarn tassel hangings while exploring the Appalachian tradition of making beautiful and practical items from readily available materials.

Saturday, July 18┃12 – 2 p.m. Paper Marbling with Toni Ogden

Learn the centuries-old art of paper marbling and create unique, colorful patterns while discovering how traditional artistic techniques continue to inspire modern makers. 

Saturday, August 22 ┃12 – 2 p.m. Herbalist Workshop With Shannon Murphy

Explore the rich tradition of Appalachian herbalism through a hands-on workshop focused on native medicinal and culinary plants, sustainable harvesting practices, and the region’s deep connection to the natural world. 

Saturday, September 5 ┃12 – 2 p.m. Calligraphy Workshop with Robin Skillern

Learn the art of beautiful writing using inks made from foraged natural materials. Skillern, a Greenbrier County artist and educator, draws inspiration from Appalachia’s diverse landscape and incorporates sustainable practices into her work across multiple artistic mediums.
