Locals break ground on Greenbrier Valley Family Activity Center in White Sulphur Springs

A crowd of approximately 100 people attended the groundbreaking for the Greenbrier Valley Family Activity Center last Thursday afternoon. Located just north of Food Lion on Route 92 in White Sulphur Springs, the project is a community effort years in the making.

“It’s another example that’s reflective of the community’s resilience and working together,” said Frank Alderman, board member, alluding to the town’s continued recovery from a 1,000 year flood in 2016.

“What you’re gonna see in phase one is a very large gymnasium, 30,000 square feet or more,” he shared. “It’s gonna include an indoor basketball court and soccer field, a second-story elevated walking track, lots of classrooms for after school programs, many things of that nature.”

Alderman added that while significant fundraising has already occurred, more work is needed to fully fund the project.

“You’ll start to see significant progress in the early part of 2026, and completion of this first phase in the early part of 2027,” he said, with subsequent phases to follow.

“This project is gonna have a significant impact on health, wellness, sports, recreation, education, arts, and we’re really just getting started.”
