HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University Baseball team (4-6) took its series against Butler on Sunday with a 3-1 win behind a record-breaking performance from Kenyon Collins at Jack Cook Field.

“Obviously, it’s good to get the series win at home and just being in the winning column. We played some really clean baseball today,” Herd Baseball Head Coach Greg Beals said. “It starts on the mound. Kenyon Collins pitched a great ballgame. We played good defense behind him. We didn’t need a ton of it because he struck out 14 guys. We ended up striking them out 15 times of the 27 outs, but we made some plays when we needed to.”

Collins hurled 8.1 innings, allowing just one run on four hits with a program record 14 strikeouts for his first win of the season. The native of Ona, West Virginia, registered five 1-2-3 innings during his quality start.

Charlie Krebs recorded the final two outs, earning his first save of the year, by stranding a pair of Bulldogs on the bases.

Offensively, the Herd struck first in the third inning when Tyler Kamerer smashed a solo home run to left, his first of the season, giving Marshall a 1-0 lead they would not relinquish. Kamerer finished the afternoon with three hits, pacing the offense from start to finish.

The score remained tight until the bottom of the eighth, when Evan Bottone delivered with a two-run blast to right field, scoring catcher Jackson Golden and providing key insurance runs. Bottone, who also tallied two RBI, now has a team-high four home runs on the year and is tied for the team lead in RBI at 11 with Jackson Halter.

Butler broke up the shutout in the ninth with a base-loaded groundout, but Krebs slammed the door to secure the win.
