How to help with flood relief efforts in southern West Virginia

By RealWV staff,

Looking for a way to help our brothers and sisters in the coalfields of southern West Virginia following devastating flooding over the weekend? There are numerous opportunities to do so, and here are a few we would suggest.

BECKLEY AREA FOUNDATION

For those who want to give funds, the Beckley Area Foundation (BAF) has set up two community funds for flood relief–The Community Fund for McDowell County and The Community Fund for Wyoming County. 100% of donations will be sent to local nonprofits on the ground providing assistance. To give, visit BAF online.

LOVE CHILD

For those in the Greenbrier Valley who want to give flood relief supplies. Love Child (the children’s store in downtown Lewisburg) is collecting items through Saturday, February 22.

“We’re collecting blankets, bleach, heaters, and water,” says owner Siobhan Winters. “People can drop off the items here at the store.”

Love Child is located at 933 Washington Street West in downtown Lewisburg, across from City Hall. They are open 10am-5pm.

GREENBRIER WEST HIGH SCHOOL

In a partnership with ACE Hardware of Rainelle, students at Greenbrier West are collecting flood relief supplies. A trailer will be parked at ACE in downtown Rainelle. Citizens may drop off or purchase items which will be delivered to McDowell County on February 25.

FIVE LOAVES & TWO FISHES FOOD BANK

The food bank in Kimball, McDowell County, is accepting monetary donations directly via this link. They also have an Amazon wish list from which items can be purchased and delivered to them to assist local residents.

VOLUNTEERS

If you want to come and volunteer your time and talents, call the McDowell County Flood Helpline at 888-929-4966. They are taking calls 8am-8pm in order to connect volunteers with flood relief jobs.

These are only a few of many options to help neighbors in need. Please add additional suggestions in the comments on social media for our readers to see.
