Cathey Sawyer
A few years ago, Cathey Sawyer retired. For 30 years, she ran The State Professional Theatre of West Virginia, Greenbrier Valley Theatre, in downtown Lewisburg, WV. But retirement hasn’t slowed her down one bit. In fact, she’s more active than ever in serving her neighbors.
Cathay serves on various boards including the Greenbrier Humane Society & the American Civil Liberties Union West Virginia. She organizes Penny Pitch, a holiday program supporting working families who struggle to make ends meet. She actively serves on the Greenbrier County Democratic Women’s Club, working the polls during elections. She spends her Thanksgiving each year volunteering for a community meal.
And that’s not even including three of her greatest loves–dogs, band kids, and her friends.
It’s not unusual for Cathey to pick up stray animals around town and ensure their needs are met. Sometimes, she fosters the animals herself until they find a forever home.
The Eastern Greenbrier Middle School Marching Band calls her their “band aunt,” as she helps maintain their uniforms, equipment, and supplies.
Most days, you will see her around town giving rides to her friends and neighbors. She takes folks to the doctor and community events out of the goodness of her heart.

If it weren’t for retirees like Cathey, who are busier than they’ve ever been before serving their communities, communities across West Virginia would be lost. For showing up every single day with a bright smile on her face and providing hope to her community, we are proud to name Cathey Sawyer as the certified Real West Virginian of the Week.
