Pittsburgh Steelers release WVU alum Doug Nester

PITTSBURGH, PA. – The NFL’s Pittsburgh Steelers, on Friday, announced their first round of pre-season roster cuts. Among the 11 players released by the team, was WVU alumni Doug Nester.
Nester, a 320 offensive lineman, started 36 games for the Mountaineers – 24 games at the right guard position, and 12 at right tackle. Though not selected in the 2024 NFL Draft, Nester would spend most of training camp with the Minnesota Vikings – including appearances in two preseason games – before joining the Steelers’ practice squad in late-August.
In January, the Steelers made Nester their first re-signing of the 2025 season, securing the Kenova-native’s preseason services. However, Nester and the Steelers agreed to a “future contract,” which does not guarantee a place on the team beyond the 90-man off-season roster. NFL rules require each team to trim their roster to 53 players by 4 p.m. Tuesday, and with Nester’s August 9 performance against the Jacksonville Jaguars not meeting the Steelers’ expectations, Nester was one of two offensive lineman to be released.
