Looking for a new adventure this spring?
Spring marks the peak season for experienced rafters at the Gorge, especially in April. Some even refer to this time of year as “insider season,” before summer brings the arrival of most tourists.
Rafting season in West Virginia typically runs from April through October.
Spring rains and snowmelt raise water levels, creating bigger waves and faster currents — perfect for adrenaline seekers looking for a thrill in April and May.
More of a beginner? During the summer months — typically Memorial Day through Labor Day — the river settles down. With lower water levels and warmer temperatures, it’s an ideal time for families and first-timers to enjoy a more laid-back trip on the New River.

The New River Gorge is one of the most popular places for whitewater rafting in the United States, drawing people from all over who are looking for a fun and thrilling outdoor experience. Each year, more than 60,000 visitors come to raft its waters, enjoying everything from calm stretches to more challenging rapids. Along the way, rafters get to take in West Virginia’s beautiful mountains, with steep cliffs, thick forests, and plenty of wildlife.
You may be wondering if this is a safe experience, and while whitewater rafting carries its own set of risks, it is generally considered a safe adventure when using professional guides and appropriate safety gear.
Suit up in your life jacket and helmet, join certified whitewater guides, and get ready for some excitement.
