Herd baseball clinches series with 13-10 win in Game 2 over ULM

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University Baseball team (23-27, 13-13 SBC) registered a series-clinching 13-10 win on Saturday over the ULM Warhawks in game two on Saturday at Jack Cook Field.

“It’s good to get the win and secure the series win,” Herd Baseball Head Coach Greg Beals said. “Tomorrow is going to be a great day celebrating our seniors. Getting an opportunity to get a sweep here at home in the last series.”

Cooper Hinson led the team with three hits while notching a pair of RBI. Jackson Golden registered four RBI with a pair of extra base hits on a double and a homer. Evan Bottone and AJ Havrilla collected a pair of hits and two RBI each with Mason Onate scoring three runs with two hits.

Davis Gunn earned his first collegiate win throwing the final 1.1 innings giving up just two hits and striking out three.

ULM tallied two runs in each of the fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth innings to tie the game 10-10. In the bottom of the eighth, Hinson led off with a single before Ethan Murdoch reached on a fielder’s choice. Two wild pitches later Murdoch reached third with one out. Onate stood at the plate with a 3-1 count and smoked the pitch down the right-field line to score Murdoch and put MU back on top 11-10.

After a groundout, Onate took third on a wild pitch before Golden hit a two-out, two-run homer to center to make it 13-10. Then in the top of ninth, after allowing a pair of singles Gunn struck out the side to end the game.

Marshall opened the scoring with six runs in the bottom of the first with a Havrilla two-RBI double, a two-RBI single by Hinson and a two-RBI double from Bottone.

After ULM grabbed a pair of runs in the top of the second, Murdoch scored Jackson Halter with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the second with Havrilla scoring on a Jack Smith groundout and Onate and Hinson scoring on a Golden double in the fourth.
