West Virginia Freedom Caucus urges Governor Morrisey to follow President Trump’s lead and suspend the state gas tax
PRESS RELEASE
Charleston, WV — For more than two months, the West Virginia Freedom Caucus has publicly called on Governor Patrick Morrisey and state leadership to suspend West Virginia’s gas tax and provide immediate relief to struggling families facing rising fuel prices and inflation.
Now, with President Donald Trump publicly supporting a suspension of the federal gas tax, the Freedom Caucus says the time for action is now.
“The West Virginia Freedom Caucus has been sounding the alarm on this issue for months,” said Chris Anders, Chairman of the West Virginia Freedom Caucus.
“Working people cannot continue to absorb skyrocketing fuel costs while government continues collecting more tax revenue at the pump,” he added.
West Virginia families rely heavily on vehicles for work, school, farming, and daily life.
Rising fuel costs hit rural states like West Virginia especially hard, increasing the cost of groceries, utilities, construction, and transportation across the board.
“West Virginians are already paying too much in taxes, utilities, and groceries,” said Caucus Secretary Henry Dillon.
“We need to provide relief for families and hard working people who deserve a fair shake for their efforts,” he added.
“President Trump understands what many politicians refuse to admit: inflation is crushing the American people,” Anders said.
“If Washington is discussing suspending the federal gas tax, West Virginia should already be leading the way at the state level.” Anders emphasized.
The West Virginia Freedom Caucus is calling on Governor Morrisey and legislative leadership to:
- Immediately suspend the state gasoline tax
- Suspend the diesel tax to lower transportation and food costs
- Return surplus taxpayer money back to citizens instead of growing government
- Put working families ahead of bureaucracy and political insiders
The caucus noted that government should not use inflation as a mechanism to quietly collect more money from struggling citizens.
“Government spending helped create this inflation crisis,” Anders explained.
“The answer is not to squeeze taxpayers harder. The answer is to let people keep more of their own money,” Anders pointed out.
The Freedom Caucus stated it remains committed to advancing real tax relief and will continue pushing policies that reduce the burden on West Virginia families.
