Gritty Chix Mud Run brings mud, teamwork, and empowerment to ACE Adventure Resort

OAK HILL, W.Va. — The Gritty Chix Mud Run will take place June 20 at ACE Adventure Resort, offering participants a chance to get muddy, challenge themselves, and have fun in a supportive, noncompetitive environment.
The event is designed for women and girls ages 10 and up, while also welcoming families and “Dirty Dudes” to join in. Participants can expect muddy obstacle courses, natural terrain challenges, water features, and an energetic atmosphere focused on teamwork, encouragement, and making memories.
“Gritty Chix is very much a women-focused event centered around empowerment, encouragement, and having fun together,” said Lindsey Pratt, organizer for ACE Adventure Resort. “We try to create a welcoming and supportive atmosphere where everyone feels comfortable participating at their own pace.”
Over the years, the event has continued to grow as participants return annually and bring friends and family along. Pratt said course options have expanded, along with more obstacles and activities meant to appeal to a range of fitness levels.
Participants can choose between two course options: the 5K Tenacious Trail and the 1-mile Moxie Mile.
The 5K Tenacious Trail is the longer course, combining traditional mud run obstacles with a trail run through natural terrain, hills, mud pits, and endurance-focused challenges. The 1-mile Moxie Mile is shorter and designed more as an obstacle course experience, making it a good option for beginners, younger participants, or anyone who wants to enjoy the obstacles without committing to the full 5K distance.
Although the event includes mud pits and obstacles, Pratt said Gritty Chix is intentionally designed to be approachable for first-time participants.
“We intentionally design the event so participants can challenge themselves while still feeling comfortable and supported,” Pratt said. “Since the event is noncompetitive, the focus stays on participation and fun rather than speed or performance.”
Many obstacles are team-oriented, and participants are encouraged to move at their own pace. Most obstacles also have a bypass option for anyone who is not comfortable completing a specific challenge.
That sense of camaraderie is a major part of the event’s identity.

“Some of the best moments happen when people help each other through obstacles, cheer on teammates, or simply laugh together after falling into the mud,” Pratt said. “We want participants to leave not only feeling accomplished personally, but also connected to the people around them.”
In addition to the run itself, Gritty Chix includes fun prize categories such as best costume, largest team, furthest traveled, and most creative team name. Pratt said those elements add personality and energy to the day.
“Gritty Chix is about more than just finishing the course — it’s about creativity, personality, and shared experiences,” Pratt said.
The event also includes a post-run party with awards and live music at The Lost Paddle, giving participants a chance to relax and celebrate after the course.
Giving back is also part of the event. Each year, a portion of proceeds benefits a nonprofit organization connected to empowerment, community, and support for women and girls. This year’s beneficiary is the Girl Scouts of Black Diamond Council.
“Being able to combine a fun outdoor event with a meaningful cause allows participants to feel like they’re contributing to something bigger while also enjoying the experience themselves,” Pratt said.
For anyone nervous about signing up for their first mud run, Pratt said Gritty Chix is meant for all experience levels.
“There’s no pressure to be the fastest or most athletic person out there,” Pratt said. “Most participants are there to laugh, make memories, and challenge themselves in a positive environment.”
