THE FRONT PORCH: Does social media connect or isolate us?
By Dakota Baker, Real WV

Social media has both positive and negative effects on how we connect with each other. On one hand, it helps us stay in touch with friends and extended family. Platforms like Instagram and Facebook allow us to share pieces of our lives and instantly communicate, no matter the distance. Social media is also an extraordinary tool when it comes to meeting new people, especially people you may not come across in your day-to-day life.
On the other hand, social media can sometimes isolate us. While we may have hundreds of connections online, we sometimes find ourselves participating less and less in face-to-face interactions.
Online conversations can feel less personal than real-life interactions, and excessive social media use may lead to feelings of loneliness or disconnection. It’s also extremely easy to compare your life to the lives of others online, which can negatively affect self-esteem and relationships.
Social media can either bring people closer together or make them feel more disconnected, depending on how it’s used. When used in moderation, it can be a great way to stay in touch and maintain relationships. But when it starts replacing face-to-face interactions, it can create distance between us. It’s important to find the balance between connecting online and spending meaningful time together in person.
Do you think social media is a good tool to stay connected, or does it cause us to isolate ourselves more?
