Fien’s Deli serves up homemade meals, fresh pastries in White Sulphur Springs

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.Va. — Growing up in Belgium, Delphine Houssin was used to going to the local bakery to pick up a quick bite to eat.
“I’ve always wanted a place where you could pick up some dinner, like what I was used to in Belgium,” Houssin said.
Houssin had been running Gustard’s in White Sulphur Springs with her fiancè Stephen Gustard when the space across the street became available, and she decided it was now or never.
Fien’s Deli opened in May and is a European-inspired deli and bakery that serves homemade takeout meals for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
“It’s meals for a single person, or people who are older. I have people that come in and buy eight meals at a time and freeze them,” she said.
“We try to do a variety every day. Right now, they have three options for dinner. Every day, we make a lunch salad and lunch sandwich. For breakfast, we have sourdough biscuits with egg, bacon, and cheese, and then we also do some hot dogs and puff pastries for lunch with curry ketchup which seems to be going over very well.”
Popular desserts that people see at Gustard’s are also part of the offerings.

“I try to make pastries as fast as I can — it’s hard to keep up — they go really quick.”
Pastries, such as croissants, scones, and danishes are baked fresh from scratch.
“I’ve had a lot of practice,” she said. “I’ve always worked in restaurants since I was 14,” she said as she prepared danishes with fresh cream and cherries for the next day.
The refrigerated cases display tiramisu, chocolate cake, salads, pasta salads, and daily specials.

Houssin said the response from the community has been overwhelmingly positive.
“People keep coming back, and we see the same faces. It’s easy to pick up your food a couple of days ahead.”
Fien’s Deli is located at 728 Main St E. White Sulphur Springs, W.Va.
Hours are 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.
