HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – It’s decision day for Marshall Women’s Soccer and the Sun Belt Conference on Sunday. The Herd (7-5-5, 3-3-3 SBC, 12 Pts.) needs a victory in the regular season finale to guarantee a spot in the 2026 SBC Tournament. MU travels to face Coastal Carolina (8-7-3, 2-5-2 SBC, 8 Pts.) Sunday at 1 p.m. from Conway.
With Marshall sitting in 7th place with 12 conference points, three teams are just one point behind in the SBC Standings. The Top-8 move on to the SBC Women’s Soccer Championship in Foley, Alabama starting on Nov. 9.

COACH RAFA SIMOES
- Head Coach Rafa Simoes is in his third season leading the MU Women’s Soccer program. The former associate with the Herd men’s team is a 2018 graduate of the University of Charleston in West Virginia, where he played for then-head coach Chris Grassie.
- Simoes and the Herd had a resurgent 2025 season. In his second year as skipper for MU, Simoes led the team to win its most games in a decade (8) with four All-Conference selections, also the program’s most since 2015.
PRE-MATCH NOTES
- While a win would guarantee a spot for the Herd in its second-consecutive conference tournament, anything less could be enough to send the team through. SBC Tiebreakers could come into play in the case of a two or three-team tie.
- A Herd victory would also secure consecutive winning seasons for the first time in program history. An eighth win would match last season’s total, the most the program has had since 2015.
- Marshall will look to break its two-match goalless drought. The only other two-match streak without a goal this season, MU broke it with a season-high four goal eruption at Bellarmine (Sept. 6).
ABOUT THE CHANTICLEERS
- With eight points, Coastal Carolina is still mathematically alive for the SBC Tournament, but would need help in addition to its must-win scenario. The Chanticleers are seeking their first postseason since the 2024 SBC Tournament.
- Junior forward Olivia Goretzski leads the team with seven goals and two assists.
- The series, which dates back to MU’s arrival in the SBC, is tied, 1-1-2.
