There’s a new ‘Maverick’ in Monroe County Schools

James Monroe High School received a therapy dog named “Maverick” last week.

The dog’s role is to provide emotional support to JMHS students. Maverick is a ten-month-old Golden Retriever trained at Ultimate Canine in Indianapolis, Indiana.  He arrived at the school last Monday with his trainer, Jil Mazellan. Four teachers, Renee Wilson, Stormy Thorne, Cat Thomas, and Becky Crabtree completed a three-day Therapy K-9 Training Course and earned certification as therapy dog trainers. Maverick will be available during school hours and selected school events.

Initial funding for the dog has been provided by Communities in Schools. This project is also supported by Kathy Justice’s “Friends with Paws” program. Donations and fund-raisers will provide continuing support. [Checks should be made to JMHS with “dog” in the note.] There will be a QR code for electronic donations soon.
