Moran’s hit earns Golden Eagles a walk-off victory

Wise, Va. – Charleston continued its softball weekend at Bill Gatton Field with a doubleheader split, walking off Cedarville in game one before Virginia Wise took the finale.

Game 1:

THE BASICS:
Location: Wise, Va. (Bill Gatton Field)
score: Charleston 4, Cedarville 3
Records: Charleston 2-1 (0-0 MEC), Cedarville 0-8 (0-0 G-MAC)

How it Happened:
Charleston struck first in the opening inning, capitalizing on early traffic on the bases. Ella Zucchero reached safely and later came home on a sacrifice fly by Kayla Moran, before Danielle Pici followed with an RBI single to give the Golden Eagles a 2-0 advantage.

Cedarville responded in the second inning with an RBI double before taking its first lead of the game in the third, pushing two runs across to move ahead 3-2.
The Golden Eagles evened the score in the fifth inning when Taylor Hodson launched a solo home run, tying the game at 3-3 and shifting momentum back to Charleston.

The contest remained knotted into the seventh inning, when Mianna Oglesby led off with a triple to left-center field. Moments later, Moran delivered the decisive hit, singling through the right side to bring home Oglesby and secure the walk-off victory for Charleston.

Game 2:

How It Happened:
Charleston opened the scoring in the nightcap as Taylor Hodson drove in a run with an RBI single in the first inning to give the Golden Eagles an early 1-0 lead.
Virginia Wise answered in the third inning with a two-run double to move in front before extending its advantage in the fourth, scoring three times to build a 5-1 lead.

Charleston mounted a response in the fifth inning, erupting for four runs to erase the deficit. Caraline Dunn delivered a two-run single before Mikiaela Guillen followed with a sacrifice fly. Aubriana Espinoza capped the rally with an RBI double to tie the game at 5-5.

The Cavaliers regained control in the sixth inning, pushing across two runs to reclaim the lead. Charleston threatened in the seventh but was unable to bring the tying run across, as Virginia Wise closed out the 7-5 win.


Up Next:
Charleston returns home to host the Golden Eagles Invitational at the UC Softball Field. The Golden Eagles will open the tournament on Thursday, Feb. 20, with a 10 a.m. matchup against Edinboro University of Pennsylvania.
