THE FRONT PORCH: Will my vote make a difference in the May primary?
By Dakota Baker, The Real WV
The West Virginia congressional and state primary election is coming up on Tuesday, May 12.
Will my vote make a difference? It’s a question many voters ask, especially during primary elections. It can feel like one vote doesn’t matter in the grand scheme of things. But the truth is, every vote counts, and sometimes elections are decided by very small numbers.
In primary elections, fewer people usually vote compared to big general elections. This means each vote counts even more. When turnout is low, a small group of voters can have a big impact on who gets chosen as a candidate. So by voting, you have a stronger voice than you might think.
Additionally, your vote is a way to share what you care about. It tells leaders which issues matter to the people in their community. Even if your candidate doesn’t win, your vote still sends a message about your values and priorities.
So, will your vote make a difference? By itself, it may seem small. But together with others, it helps shape the outcome and strengthens the idea that everyone’s voice matters.
