Witness the creation of a Tibetan mandala: A week of sand painting and community participation

Lewisburg, West Virginia – Carnegie Hall invites the community to experience one of Tibet’s most revered artistic and spiritual traditions during a week‑long exploration of Mandala Sand Painting, taking place September 21-26 as part of The Mystical Arts of Tibet residency.

Each day, in the Old Stone Room, visitors are welcome to observe the Drepung Loseling monks as they construct an intricate mandala using millions of grains of colored sand, placed with extraordinary precision through a meditative process that has been practiced in Tibetan monasteries for more than a thousand years. The creation begins immediately following the Mandala Opening Ceremony on Sunday, September 20, at 2 p.m., and continues throughout the week in the Old Stone Room, where audiences can witness the gradual unfolding of the mandala’s geometric architecture and symbolic imagery. The atmosphere is quiet, contemplative, and deeply immersive, offering a rare opportunity to watch master artists at work as they transform a blank surface into a vibrant expression of spiritual harmony.

In addition to observing the monks’ progress, Carnegie Hall will offer a Community Sand Painting experience, inviting participants of all ages to engage directly with this ancient art form. Under gentle guidance in the Museum Gallery, visitors may create their own small sand designs, gaining insight into the patience, focus, and intention that define the mandala tradition. This hands‑on activity is offered free of charge, ensuring that the entire community can take part in the residency’s spirit of cultural exchange and shared creativity.

Whether watching the monks shape the mandala over several days or contributing to a personal sand creation, guests will encounter a practice that embodies mindfulness, beauty, and the interconnectedness of all things.

The week concludes with the ceremonial dismantling of the monks’ mandala on Saturday, September 26, at 4 p.m. A powerful reminder of impermanence that underscores the profound meaning behind this centuries‑old art.
