Mercer County Animal Shelter announces code red status
Mercer County Animal Shelter is currently in crisis and asking the community for help.

PRINCETON, W.Va — Mercer County Animal Shelter is currently in crisis and asking the community for help. The shelter is critically overcrowded, and many animals need to be adopted or placed in foster homes by Friday.
If the shelter cannot create enough space, some animals may need to be euthanized.
As of Sept. 9, 2026, there were still four sponsorships left, making the next four dog adoption fees completely covered.
The shelter is open from noon to 6 p.m. Some of the available animals are pictured. View the shelter’s Facebook page to see all animals available for adoption.
