Hanging Rock Raptor Observatory

Nature’s Haven And Celestial Spectacle

By Jonathan Eggleston, for RealWV

Perched atop Peters Mountain, in Monroe County WV,  the Hanging Rock Raptor Observatory is a place of unspoiled beauty in West Virginia’s wilderness.

Once a fire tower, this location has been transformed into a sanctuary for migrating birds and a cherished spot for hikers and photographers.

With its rich history and breathtaking panoramic views, it’s no wonder this place has become a favorite local spot for adventure seekers.

Years ago, the Observatory served as a fire tower, helping protect the surrounding wilderness from the threat of forest fires. However, with advancements in fire-monitoring technology, the tower’s purpose shifted, paving the way for its new role as a bird observatory.

This place has become a haven for birdwatchers, especially during the migration seasons.

Birds, (such as raptors, hawks, eagles, falcons, and osprey) use Peters Mountain as a critical point on their long journeys.

As a result, this observatory has become a prime location for bird enthusiasts and researchers to observe and study them in their natural habitat.

The journey to the top of Peters Mountain is a rewarding experience. The trail leading up to the observatory offers a moderate yet invigorating hike, treating visitors to awe-inspiring vistas of rolling hills, valleys, and forests along the way.

Total Eclipse

In November 2022, the Observatory provided me with an experience of a lifetime. Eager to witness the lunar eclipse, I decided to venture up the mountain, knowing that this elevated vantage point would be ideal for capturing the event.

As the moon slid into the Earth’s shadow, bathing the landscape in an ethereal glow, I aimed my camera at the  moon. Just as it reached its full totality, a breathtaking surprise unfolded before my lens.

A Taurid fireball streaked across the night sky, creating a stunning juxtaposition display of natural wonders. It was a once-in-a-lifetime shot that I will cherish forever!

Adding to the enchantment, shortly before the total eclipse, the International Space Station (ISS) made a captivating flyby overhead, its presence contrasting against the darkened lunar beauty.

Nature’s Finale: A Sunrise of Vibrant Hues

As the eclipse faded, the magic continued into the morning, as the sunrise painted the horizon with a breathtaking display of colors. The vibrant hues of oranges, pinks, and purples transformed the landscape into a mesmerizing canvas, adding to the magic of Hanging Rock and leaving a lasting impression on me.

The Hanging Rock Observatory is undoubtedly a gem to protect and cherish. Its rich history as a fire tower, followed by its transformation into a birdwatcher’s paradise, has given this location a unique charm.

With its awe-inspiring 360-degree views and unforgettable views of the heavens, it is a place that invites both hikers and nature enthusiasts alike.

Whether you seek the sight of migrating birds, the magic of a beautiful sunset, or an unobstructed view of a lunar eclipse, Hanging Rock Observatory promises a remarkable journey into the heart of West Virginia’s natural beauty and remains a place I will continue to visit for a long time!
