Applications now being accepted for Charleston’s next Chief of Police

By RealWV Staff,

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Charleston Mayor Amy Schuler Goodwin, on Friday, announced that applications are now being accepted for the position of chief of police for the City of Charleston Police Department.

“Naming our city’s next Chief of Police is something I take very seriously,” Goodwin said on Friday, in a statement released by her office. “The ideal candidate must be able to work with our Charleston police officers and with our communities, be someone who our officers and community members can put their faith and trust in, and have experience in the law enforcement field.”

The City of Charleston Police Department has been without a permanent chief since former Chief Tyke Hunt stepped down from the role on Aug. 18, citing “health and personal reasons.” Tyke, however, remained with the department as a lieutenant, but was placed on paid administrative in September amidst an internal affairs investigation. Since that time, Deputy Chief Scott Dempsey has served as chief in an interim capacity.

“For the past several weeks, we have researched and reviewed application processes for police departments and law enforcement agencies in West Virginia and across the country so that we could establish a more robust process for selecting our next Police Chief,” Goodwin’s statement continues. “We will accept applications to fill the vacancy, followed by an interview process before naming a new Chief of Police for the Charleston Police Department.”

Applications for the position will be accepted through January 15, 2024. Applications are available online, at For additional information, including questions about the application process, contact the City of Charleston Human Resources Department, at 304-348-8015.
