Front Porch Conversations: Student needs help with problem at school

Studious student writes: 

I work hard on my school assignments. But I have a friend who steals my work sometimes and makes it his own. He just changes a few words here and there on our English essays for example. I’m getting tired of it. It doesn’t feel right. But it’s my word against his and the teacher doesn’t seem to care. What should I do?

We agree with you, this “doesn’t feel right.” It’s not clear from your question if you have talked to your teacher about what is happening. Perhaps he/she isn’t fully aware of the situation?

A teacher is the captain of his/her classroom, and should take your concerns seriously. We suggest finding a time when you will have your teacher’s full attention and explain what is happening. Let your teacher know “this doesn’t feel right.” If you need to, present your evidence. 

In the meantime, if your friend asks to see your work, tell him “No.” However, you may suggest that you would be willing to help him with his own work if he is struggling. It may be that he is having a hard time, or he thinks that because you are friends you don’t mind him copying your work. 

If your school offers tutoring, you may also suggest that your friend sign up. Let him know that you work hard on your own essays, and do not want them copied. 

Letting your feelings be known may help solve the problem.
