Randy Moss
During his years on the field, Kanawha County native Randy Moss proved himself as one of the greatest American football players to ever wear a helmet. A 1997 All-American for the Marshall University Thundering Herd, and the Minnesota Vikings’ first-round draft pick in 1998, Moss scored more touchdowns in his rookie season than any other wide receiver in NFL history.
During his 14 seasons in the NFL, Randy Moss also spent time with the Oakland Raiders, Tennessee Titans, San Francisco 49ers, and New England Patriots. In 2007, Moss’ 23 touchdowns established a new benchmark for professional football. Moss finished his career with 156 touchdowns, and more than 15,000 total receiving yards.
Outside of football, Moss has devoted significant amounts of both his time, and his money, to bettering the lives of children across the United States. During his time with the New England Patriots, Moss organized a school backpack giveaway to underprivileged Boston-area children. And in 2009, Moss’ foundation provided the necessary funding for Charleston’s Women and Children’s Hospital to purchase a portable, bedside entertainment system for young patients to enjoy.
For being a hero to millions both on and off the football field, and a shining example of what West Virginians are capable of, we are pleased to name Randy Moss as the certified Real West Virginian of the Week.
