Language is not only the words we speak, but a form of expression that fosters connection. This is why language education is vital. Learning diverse languages is a superpower that opens a world of opportunities, enabling cultural growth and the formation of new relationships.

The West Virginia Foreign Language Teachers Association (WVFLTA), whose mission is to empower teachers and students to make global and local connections through language and culture, held its 2025 fall conference on October 3rd and 4th at New River CTC in Lewisburg, WV. During a luncheon on Friday, they honored the many educators who are dedicated to teaching the art of foreign language in our state.

Li Jung Chang, who works between three different schools, was awarded the WVFLTA Outstanding Teacher Award for the 25-26 school year. This award is presented based on the recipient’s teaching philosophy, excellence in teaching, dedication to students, professional involvement, and professional growth. Li has been an educator for 17 years and told the Real WV that one of her main reasons for staying in West Virginia is her kids (students).

The last award presented at the luncheon was the Founders’ Award. This award was established in 1999 and honors an individual who has excelled in the areas of language teaching and/or global education. The awardee has consistently demonstrated professional dedication and enthusiasm, as well as leadership in the promotion of language learning and international studies. Nancy Ryan, who was unable to attend in person, was presented this award for her years of dedication and the countless lives she touched during her time as an educator in West Virginia. Nancy was attending via phone call and said, “My heart and soul belongs to WVFLTA…”

Please join the Real WV in congratulating these educators for their countless hours of dedication to our West Virginia youth, we see and appreciate you!
