Mountaineers fall to No. 5 North Carolina in College World Series

OMAHA, Neb. – The No. 16 West Virginia University baseball team fell to No. 5 North Carolina, 5-2, Sunday evening in the Men’s College World Series at Charles Schwab Field. The Mountaineers drop to 46-16 while the Tar Heels improve to 52-12-1.
Redshirt junior Maxx Yehl went 7.0 innings on the mound and gave up five runs, only two of which were earned. He struck out seven while walking just one. Graduate student Reese Bassinger tossed a scoreless inning of relief.
At the plate, junior Armani Guzman had two hits and an RBI while graduate student Sean Smith reached base twice and scored a run.
North Carolina opened the scoring with two runs in the first before WVU tied up the game with a run in the third on a Guzman single and run in the fourth on a double play.
Yehl settled down after the first, putting up five straight scoreless frames before UNC scored three unearned runs in the seventh to take the lead.
The Mountaineers got the tying run to the plate with one out in the ninth before the Tar Heels brought in their All-American freshman closer Caden Glauber to get the final two outs.
West Virginia will have a rematch with Troy on Tuesday in an elimination game at 2 p.m. ET. In the opening game of the College World Series, the Mountaineers defeated the Trojans, 7-5.
